Why Pennsylvania Builds Septic Systems Above Ground

What’s Different About Living With One

A sand mound is not a conventional system with a hill on top. Three practical differences matter.

There is a pump. Conventional gravity systems have no moving parts. A sand mound has a pump lifting effluent into the bed, which means there is something that can fail, and usually an alarm to tell you when it has. Pump replacement is a real cost, but a modest one next to rebuilding the bed.

The mound is part of the system. It cannot be driven on, parked on, built over, or heavily landscaped. Compaction damages the sand bed’s ability to treat effluent. Grass over it is fine; a shed or a driveway is not.

Water use matters more. Because the system depends on dosing effluent into the bed in controlled amounts, sustained heavy water use stresses it more than it would a conventional field.

Winter Considerations

Because the treatment bed sits above grade, sand mounds are more exposed to cold than in-ground systems. In practice, properly designed and constructed mounds handle Pennsylvania winters, and the biological activity inside generates some heat.

The genuine winter risks are more mundane: don’t compact snow over the mound by driving or plowing across it, since compacted snow loses its insulating value, and keep an eye on the pump alarm during extended cold snaps.
